Novel in vivo optical imaging technologies allow for longitudinally monitoring morphological and functional changes of different parts of the brain in murine disease models, at cellular or even subcellular resolution. Hence, they provide unique perspectives on chronic neuroinflammatory diseases, relevant for understanding their pathogenesis and chronification.
