Bacterial pneumonia – understanding host defense and susceptibility factors
Prof. Bastian Opitz

Department of Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine, Charité – Universitätsmedizin

Summary: Lower respiratory tract infections are the leading infectious cause of death and the fifth-leading cause of death overall. We are investigating how the immune system protects the host against lung infections and how those defense mechanisms re influenced by endogenous and exogenous susceptibility factors. I will present our latest insight and discuss how a better understanding of these mechanisms might help to develop novel prophylactic and/or therapeutic strategies.
