Postdoc and PhD student (m/f/div) positions, Systems Biology of Inflammation

The DRFZ is a member of the Leibniz Association and dedicated to the interdisciplinary research of rheumatic diseases. Today it is one of the leading international institutes in the field of immunology, experimental rheumatology and rheumatism epidemiology. For research headed by Dr. Kevin Thurley, we are looking for outstanding candidates (m/f/div) with genuine interest in applying advanced mathematical modeling and data analysis approaches to study cell-to-cell communication networks in the inflammatory response. The positions are initially funded for two years (postdoc) and three years (PhD), and can be extended.
The mammalian immune response depends on the interaction and collaboration of many, highly individual cells. Recent work in our group has emphasized the need for mathematical analysis in the regulation of immune responses (Thurley et al., PLoS Comp Biol 2015; Hammer et al., Nat Immunol 2018; Thurley, Wu, Altschuler, Cell Systems 2018).
We are currently recruiting a postdoc (m/f/div) and a PhD student (m/f/div), where specific tasks can be adapted according to interests and personal strengths of the candidates:
(1) A bioinformatics postdoc (m/f/div), who will conduct and supervise data-analysis projects in our group, with a focus on high content single immune-cell data (sc-seq and multicolor flow-cytometry) available from our collaborators. The projects also may comprise analysis of high-content imaging data and T cell repertoire data, offering ample opportunity to make significant contributions to research projects with direct medical implications and develop state-of-the-art immunological data analysis strategies. The postdoc will closely collaborate with scientists on both the experimental and the mathematical modeling sides, and will thus be in a highly versatile interface position.
(2) A PhD student (m/f/div) for data-driven modeling of innate lymphoid cell-centered networks driving autoimmune organ damage. This project will entail first-hand analysis of single-cell data from a specific in vivo model system of autoimmune disease, and subsequent mathematical analysis of cell-cell interaction networks. Model-derived hypotheses can be directly tested within the project, which will be performed in tight collaboration with the Triantafyllopoulou group (DRFZ and Charite) and other members of the DFG priority program “innate lymphoid cells”.
We are looking for highly motivated, independent and committed scientists with a Master degree in (bio-)physics, systems biology, mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline. Experience in mathematical modeling and data analysis techniques as well as computer programming skills are highly appreciated. Training in immunology or basic cell biology is an advantage. The position requires good communication and interpersonal skills, and fluent English.
