{"id":13695,"date":"2023-07-03T15:14:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T15:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.drfz.de\/neuigkeiten\/tgf%ce%b2-als-biomarker-fuer-schwere-covid-19-verlaeufe\/"},"modified":"2025-03-11T15:37:27","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T15:37:27","slug":"tgf%ce%b2-als-biomarker-fuer-schwere-covid-19-verlaeufe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drfz.de\/en\/neuigkeiten\/tgf%ce%b2-als-biomarker-fuer-schwere-covid-19-verlaeufe\/","title":{"rendered":"TGF-\u03b2 as a biomarker for severe COVID-19 disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cytokine TGF-\u03b2 can be used as a biomarker to predict the severity of COVID-19 progression during the early stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from Mir-Farzin Mashreghi\u2019s group at the DRFZ, in collaboration with the Charit\u00e9 \u2013 Universit\u00e4tsmedizin Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology (ITMP), measured the concentration of the cytokine TGF-\u03b2 in the serum of COVID-19 patients. Patients with severe COVID-19 had significantly higher concentrations of TGF-\u03b2 in their serum than those with mild or moderate disease one to two weeks after the onset of symptoms. Moreover, the high early serum concentration of the cytokine in severe COVID-19 patients was predictive of a possible fatal outcome. Treatment of patients with the steroid dexamethasone to limit disease severity also reduced serum levels of TGF-\u03b2, and thus could also be used as a marker for response to therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous studies from the DRFZ have already shown that the early formation of TGF-\u03b2 inhibits the immune response against SARS-COV-2, resulting in a more severe disease outcome.
