Recognition for outstanding achievements in pediatric and adolescent medicine<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year, the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) awarded the prestigious Adalbert Czerny Prize to Dr. Carl Christoph Goetzke, Charit\u00e9 \u2013 Universit\u00e4tsmedizin Berlin and DRFZ. The award, which comes with a prize of \u20ac10,000, also includes a medal bearing the name of pediatrician Adalbert Czerny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his outstanding study \u201cTGF\u03b2 links EBV to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children,\u201d the clinician-scientist from the research groups of Tilmann Kallinich and Mir-Farzin Mashreghi has shown that the messenger molecule TGF\u03b2 is significantly elevated in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C). This leads to a temporary weakening of the immune system, making it easier for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to reactivate and setting off a spiral of inflammation. The jury emphasized that the results are not only scientifically significant, but also important for the treatment of children\u2014and even open up new avenues for prevention, such as through EBV vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This prize is awarded annually for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of pediatric and adolescent medicine, including related areas. The work must either have been accepted for publication or have been published no more than twelve months prior to the award date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
