The prize recognizes his contributions to the development of new therapies for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) targeting the CD38 molecule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alignwide wp-block-paragraph\">In the Autoimmunology Research Group led by PD Dr. Tobias Alexander and Prof. Falk Hiepe at Charit\u00e9\u2014University Medicine Berlin and the DRFZ, Dr. Ostendorf developed the therapy from preclinical data through to a successful Phase II trial. He was able to prove that treating female SLE patients with daratumumab, a drug that targets the CD38 molecule, can significantly reduce disease activity. Among other things, daratumumab kills plasma cells, which are considered drivers of the disease due to their production of autoantibodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons alignwide is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drfz.de\/en\/neuigkeiten\/promising-therapeutic-approach-for-systemic-lupus-erythematosus\/\">News about the study<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide toc-item\" id=\"grupe-zollinger-research-award\"><strong><strong>Grupe-Zollinger Research Award<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alignwide wp-block-paragraph\">The German Society of Nephrology (DGfN), in collaboration with the J\u00fcrgen and Felicitas Grupe Foundation, awards a prize that promotes and honors outstanding researchers in the field of transplantation\u2014particularly living donations\u2014as well as the immunology of kidney diseases.
