The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is medical translation: transferring biomedical research findings into novel approaches to personalized prediction, prevention, diagnostics and therapy and, conversely, using clinical observations to develop new research ideas. The aim is to deliver relevant medical benefits to patients and the population at large. The BIH is also committed to establishing a comprehensive translational ecosystem as translational research area at Charité – one that places emphasis on a system-wide understanding of health and disease and that promotes change in the biomedical research culture. The BIH is funded 90 percent by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and 10 percent by the State of Berlin. The two founding institutions, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC), were independent member entities within the BIH until 2020. As of 2021, the BIH has been integrated into Charité as the so-called third pillar; the MDC is privileged partner of the BIH.

Postdoc / Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in (m/f/div)
(fulltime, starting from 15.02.2022, appointment duration until 31.12.2023)

The interdisciplinary and international research group lead by Prof. Julia Polansky at the Berlin Institute of Health, Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is interested in understanding the epigenetic mechanisms of immune cell differentiation during health and in disease with the aim of delineating new or improved diagnostic tools and treatment strategies.

In this endeavor, we profile the epigenome of clinically-relevant primary immune cell subpopulations as well as therapeutic cell products and functionally test the impact of epigenetic alterations on the behavior, survival and function of the analyzed cells using in vitro cell culture techniques and state-of-the art molecular techniques including CRISPR-Cas9-based ap-proaches.

Your responsibilities:

To consolidate our group we are looking for a postdoctoral scientist who is interested in pursuing research at the intersection of epigenetics, immunology and molecular biology with the aim of applying the knowledge gained for the benefit of patients. One part of the work is centred on the epigenetic optimization of products for adoptive T cells therapy as part of the ERC starting grant project ‘EpiTune’ (

  • Wet-lab work using primary human cells of clinical interest (e.g. T lymphocytes, mesenchymal stroma cells and others)
  • Identification of epigenomic as well as genomic features and their functional contribution to cell type differentiation, identity, function and senescence using state of the art molecular biology methods
  • Oversight on the relevant published literature in the respective field
  • Contribution to cooporation projects with internal and international partners
  • Support in the technical supervision of PhD and master students
  • Presentation of achieved research results in meetings and conferences as well as in publications

  • PhD in a relevant scientific field (e.g. biology, bio-chemistry, genetics and others), additional research experience after finishing the PhD is a plus
  • Profound experiences in techniques from molecular biology and epigenetics (e.g. gene/protein expression analyses, profiling of DNA methylation, histone modification, DNA accessibility), experience in flow cytometry is a plus
  • Excellent English in speech and writing, good presentation skills
  • Superior communication abilities with both, life science researchers and bioinformatics professionals is needed; working experience in interdisciplinary teams is a plus
  • Interest and ability to work independently and as part of a team

We offer:

  • A collaborative research environment that encourages and supports scientific curiosity, innovation, and development of its team members
  • Remuneration according to E13 TVöD VKA-K. The grouping takes into consideration the qualifications and the personal circumstances of the candidate
  • Appointment duration until 31.12.2023
  • Family-friendly, flexible working hours

We live diversity!

BIH strongly encourages qualified women to apply. Severely disabled applicants and those with equal status will be given preferential consideration in cases of equal suitability.

Please submit your detailed application (as one document) until the 24.01.2022 via our BIH-Jobportal including the job reference number BIH.DM-18.21.
