Thomas Dörner awarded honorary EULAR membership

On 31 May 2023, Prof. Dr. Thomas Dörner was awarded honorary membership of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) at the opening ceremony of the EULAR congress in Milan, Italy.

The DRFZ liaison group leader has made outstanding contributions to the realisation of EULAR’s goals for many years, including developing the ACR/EULAR classification criteria and treatment recommendations for Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis. The rheumatologist is also a member of the EULAR Task Force for the treatment of antiphopsholipid syndrome. Thomas Dörner’s commitment to the annual EULAR congress – the world’s largest rheumatology congress – is being particularly recognised, having being a member of the EULAR Scientific Programme Committee since 2016, congress Abstract Chair in 2018 and Scientific Programme Chair in 2019.

Thomas Dörner has been head of the liaison group “Translation/B-cell memory” at the DRFZ, Berlin since 1998. The physician-scientist specialises in promoting translational research as a basis for direct and indirect B-cell targeted therapies. These are being successfully applied and further developed in the treatment of various rheumatic inflammatory diseases, including selective targeting of pathogenic B cells, which are considered to trigger autoimmune diseases.

Thomas Dörner is also Professor for Innovative Therapies in Autoimmune Diseases at the Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Here he is also responsible for the Charité’s Clinical Haemostaseology, with a focus on autoimmune and coagulation disorders and heads the Interdisciplinary Advisory Service for Haemostaseology at the hospital.

He is also a board member of the Rheumaliga Berlin e.V. and the Wolfgang Schultze Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting scientific projects and honouring outstanding research work in the field.
