Carl Goetzke is awarded the Albert Czerny Prize

Recognition for outstanding achievements in pediatric and adolescent medicine
This year, the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) awarded the prestigious Adalbert Czerny Prize to Dr. Carl Christoph Goetzke, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and DRFZ. The award, which comes with a prize of €10,000, also includes a medal bearing the name of pediatrician Adalbert Czerny.
In his outstanding study “TGFβ links EBV to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children,” the clinician-scientist from the research groups of Tilmann Kallinich and Mir-Farzin Mashreghi has shown that the messenger molecule TGFβ is significantly elevated in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C). This leads to a temporary weakening of the immune system, making it easier for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to reactivate and setting off a spiral of inflammation. The jury emphasized that the results are not only scientifically significant, but also important for the treatment of children—and even open up new avenues for prevention, such as through EBV vaccination.
