Award by the German Society of Cytometry

Dr. Lisa Budzinski was awarded the Klaus Goerttler Prize at the 35th Conference of the German Society for Cytometry (DGfZ) on September 10, 2025. This prize recognizes the exceptional research work of the biotechnologist, who completed her PhD this year at the German Rheumatology Research Center Berlin, a Leibniz Institute.

Lisa Budzinski has improved microbiota phenotyping at the DRFZ in the Schwiete Lab for Microbiota and Inflammation. This method allows for detailed analysis of individual microbial cells, their characteristics, and their interactions with the immune system.

The complex data is evaluated using machine learning. Based on such specific microbiota fingerprints, altered microbial patterns have been identified in chronic inflammatory diseases such as intestinal inflammation and rheumatic diseases. This method opens up new perspectives for diagnostics, patient selection, and therapy monitoring.

Klaus Goerttler Prize

Since 1996, the DGfZ has been awarding the Klaus Goerttler Prize to young scientists. The prize honors researchers at the beginning of their careers for their scientific work of exceptional quality and innovative strength in the field of cytometry.
