Project for Osteoarthritis research

Dr. Ping Shen of the Pitzer Laboratory for Osteoarthritis Research at the DRFZ and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is receiving this year’s research grant from the Wolfgang Schulze Foundation for her project to investigate the causes of osteoarthritis.

The researcher is investigating how breakdown products of cartilage tissue activate the immune system and thereby trigger inflammatory reactions in the joint. Based on these findings, new medications will be developed to help as many people with osteoarthritis as possible. This could provide the basis for new and effective treatment options.

Ping Shen presented her research project as part of World Arthritis Day, which took place on October 12 at the German Rheumatism Research Center (DRFZ). The event was organized jointly with the Rheuma-Liga Berlin under the motto “Focus on the Medicine of the Future: Researching Rheumatism – Shaping Health.” Prof. Dr. Max Löhning gave the laudatory speech for Ms. Shen.

Research Project funding of the Wolfgang Schulze Foundation:

The Wolfgang Schulze Foundation supports innovative, interdisciplinary research projects that contribute to improving the quality of life for people with rheumatic diseases.

The foundation was established on the initiative of Wolfgang Schulze, who himself suffered from rheumatism. His particular goal was to advance research in the field of rheumatic diseases and thereby sustainably alleviate the suffering of the people affected.

The foundation is administered by the German Rheumatism League Berlin e. V.

Funding may be awarded both to expand ongoing research projects and to support newly initiated projects. A total of 10,000 euros is available for research projects.
