Molecular Causes of Rheumatic Diseases and New Treatment Options

Dekobild

A review in Nature on disease mechanisms, targeted therapies, and potential prospects for a cure

Inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus result from a dysregulation of the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Prof. Dr. Eicke Latz from German Rheumatology Research Center Berlin, a Leibniz Institute, and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Krönke from the Department of Medicine with a focus on Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Georg Schett of Department of Medicine 3 — Rheumatology and Immunology, University Hospital Erlangen, provide an overview of current findings on the molecular basis of these diseases. In the review, published in the renowned journal Nature, the authors demonstrate how new targets and innovative therapeutic strategies are improving the treatment of chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases. These developments also open up new perspectives with the goal of a cure.
