Doctoral candidate network

Network of PhD and MD students at the DRFZ

We are the new ones – your DRFZ doctoral representatives and we want to support and strengthen the doctoral community in our institute. Our main objectives include the organization of events focusing on scientific topics, career orientation and interdisciplinary collaborations. Furthermore, we want to continue cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment where every PhD and MD student can thrive academically and personally.

You are a PhD or MD student and not part of the PhD Newsletter yet, but would like to get informed about events in the future? Then write us phd-reps@drfz.de to add you to the mailing list of doctoral students.

We are excited to build a strong network of doctoral students and would love to hear your suggestions for changes or events you would like to see at the DRFZ. So please do not hesitate to come by our offices or send us an email. We are here for you!

About us

My name is Leo Fiebig, and I am a second-year PhD student in the lab of Prof. Dr. Hyun Dong Chang. I grew up in Berlin and studied biotechnology at BHT.
During my PhD, I investigate the survival mechanisms of plasma cells in the human bone marrow. In my spare time, you might find me at pub quizzes, doing pottery, discussing movies, playing any sports, or still in the lab 🙂

My name is Toni Sempert and I am a fourth-year PhD student in the lab of Prof. Dr Hyun Dong Chang. I grew up in northern Germany and studied biotechnology at Technische Universität Berlin.
During my PhD project, I investigate the intestinal microbiota in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Together with my colleague Johannes, I organize the participation of our institute in the Team Relay every year. In my spare time, you’ll find me out in nature, on my road bike, or at one of the Yorck cinemas.

Hi I am Zeynep Durak. I am from Istanbul, Turkey and I am a a first-year PhD student in the Laboratory of Inflammatory Control at the DRFZ. I joined the lab following my MSc  in Bioinformatics at the University of Nottingham, and I am interested in the intersection of computational and molecular biology. At the DRFZ, my research  focuses on understanding how allele-specific gene regulation shapes inflammation and pathogen sensing.Outside of the lab I  love nature photography,  hiking, yoga, and reformer pilates.

My name is Adrian Barreno, I am a third-year PhD candidate in the lab of Hyun-Dong Chang and the Mass Cytometry lab. I come from Madrid, where I completed my studies in Biomedicine and Bioinformatics. At the DRFZ, I investigate how the gut microbiota interacts with the immune system in autoimmunity. Outside of the lab, I enjoy spending time playing the guitar, mountain biking and going on hikes when Berlin’s weather allows.

PhD and Postdoc Meet and Greet

First Doctoral Students and Post Doc Meet & Greet

It was no April Fool’s joke: on April 1, 2025, the doctoral students and postdocs of the DRFZ met with the Executive Board to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. From now on, we want to meet regularly so that we can get to know each other and our research and, above all, our daily experiences better. Be part of it!

The PhD network was established in 2016 as part of theLeibniz Science Campus Inflammation.

We thank our predecessors for their commitment:
