About the School

The Future Rheumatology Summer School 2027 aims to bring the latest developments in fundamental and clinical rheumatology and immunology research to doctoral students and early postdocs.

Schorfheide, north of Berlin, May 24 – 27, 2027

The three day program will cover topics from the bench to clinic, including mechanisms underlying the acquisition of immune tolerance, the genetic and environmental contributions to rheumatic disease development, and the emergence of new targeted therapies.

The school will enable close interactions between trainees and senior faculty at the cutting edge of their field. Attendees will have the opportunity to present talks and posters, and discuss ideas with world leaders, all in the comfort of the German wilderness, and just a short journey from Berlin.

Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (KIR), University of Oxford, UK, and the German Rheumatology Research Center (DRFZ) share a strong commitment to excellence in rheumatology research and are uniquely positioned to host this summer school. Together with selected external speakers, we bring complementary expertise and aim to cultivate a dynamic environment in which doctoral researchers, postdocs, and faculty can connect, learn from one another, and develop new ideas.

The programme includes the following topics:

Mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of immune tolerance
How immune and non-immune cell cross talk modulates inflammation
The role of tissue architecture in determining immune cell function
Genetic bases for the development of rheumatic diseases
Developments in personalised diagnostic and therapy approaches
Advances in cell and antibody therapies

A central aim of the summer school is to foster meaningful exchange between trainees and established researchers. In addition to the scientific programme, participants and faculty will spend time together during meals, social activities, and throughout the venue grounds, creating space for informal discussion, networking, and collaboration.

Target audience

The Future Rheumatology Summer School is open to doctoral students and early postdocs (up to 2 years post-PhD).
Up to 44 early-career researchers will be selected to participate.

Registration fees

The registration fee is 400 euros and covers accommodation, meals and participation in the Future Rheumatology Summer School 2027 programme.
We will handle the room reservations and provide a bus transfer from and to Berlin Central Station.
All rooms are double rooms.

Venue

The summer school will take place at the Ringhotel Schorfheide. This dedicated conference center offers an ideal setting for both scientific exchange and informal interaction.
